Which one fits you

Most MBA programs take both. ETS says more than 1,300 business schools accept the GRE, and GMAC says the GMAT is used by more than 7,700 programs at 2,400 institutions. So the choice is about fit, not eligibility, with two caveats: some quant-heavy and traditional programs state a GMAT preference, and a few specialized programs accept one exam only, so always check your target school's requirements page.

Take the GMAT if your strengths are structured problem-solving and data, you want no essay at all, and you are aiming only at management programs. Its Data Insights section and its question-by-question adaptive engine reward consistent accuracy under pressure.

Take the GRE if you might also apply outside management (master's and PhD programs take the GRE broadly), you would rather have a section-adaptive exam where one bad question does not immediately change your next one, you want a calculator through all of Quant, or you test better with an essay up front and no watch-your-pace item adaptivity.

The adaptivity difference, precisely

The two engines are genuinely different. The GMAT adapts question by question: every answer changes the difficulty of the next item inside that section. The GRE adapts section by section: your first Verbal and Quant sections are fixed and average, and the difficulty of your second section in each measure depends on how you did in the first. On the GMAT you can never see which items counted more; on the GRE, whole second sections move. Neither publishes its algorithm, and both score on the difficulty of what you answered, not just the count of correct answers.

Both exams got shorter recently

The GMAT dropped to 2 hours 15 minutes when the Focus Edition replaced the classic exam in February 2024, and the GRE dropped to 1 hour 58 minutes in September 2023. Comparison pages that quote a 3-hour-plus GMAT or a 3-hour-45-minute GRE are describing exams that no longer exist.

GMAT vs GRE questions

Is the GMAT harder than the GRE?

Neither publisher recognizes an official difficulty comparison. The GMAT's Quant is generally considered conceptually harder with no calculator, while the GRE's Verbal leans on vocabulary breadth. Structurally, the GMAT adapts per question and the GRE adapts per section, so the GMAT punishes a bad start faster.

Do MBA programs prefer the GMAT?

Both are accepted almost everywhere. Some quant-oriented and traditional programs state a GMAT preference, and dual-degree or specialized programs occasionally accept one exam only, so check each target program's admissions page before you commit.

Can I take both?

Yes, and scores from both are valid for five years. Most applicants should not: the formats overlap enough that studying for one is faster than splitting effort across two. Take a practice section of each and commit to the one that plays to your strengths.

Which is cheaper?

The GRE at US$249 versus US$275 for a GMAT test-center seat, and the GMAT's online version costs US$300 while the GRE at home costs the same as at a test center. The difference is small next to application fees.
