What the GRE costs
The GRE General Test costs US$249 everywhere in the world except China, where the fee is US$237.86. The fee is the same whether you test at a test center or at home. ETS prices the exam by the location of your test center, or by your own location when testing online, so the fee differs only for mainland China. The charge appears on your statement from ETS.
The registration fee includes four free score recipients on test day. After test day you can order additional score reports at US$40 per recipient. The fee covers the full exam: all five sections, the essay scoring, and the official score report.

The fee reduction program
ETS offers a GRE Fee Reduction Program that drops the General Test fee to US$100, a saving of US$149. Eligible test takers include US citizens or resident aliens who are college seniors or unenrolled graduates with financial need (a FAFSA Student Aid Index of zero or less), individuals who are unemployed and receiving unemployment compensation, current Peace Corps volunteers, and members of national programs that support underrepresented groups.
Those who receive the fee reduction also get free access to POWERPREP PLUS Online Practice Test 1 (US$45 value), POWERPREP Plus Online Practice Test 2 (US$45 value), and ScoreItNow Online Writing Practice (US$20 value), a total of US$100 in prep materials. You apply by completing the GRE Fee Reduction Request form and submitting it to ETS with supporting documentation.
Rescheduling and cancellation
Rescheduling costs US$55 (US$55.43 in China) and is done through your ETS account. There is no tiered reschedule fee based on how far ahead you reschedule, unlike the GMAT. Changing your test center costs US$55 separately.
For refund policies, ETS publishes the full terms in the GRE Information Bulletin. The fees for scoring services, including additional score reports, are non-refundable once submitted.
The home test costs the same as the test center
ETS charges US$249 for the GRE General Test whether you take it at a test center or at home. The format, content, timing, and scoring are identical. The home test is available 24/7 in many regions; test takers in mainland China register for it through takethegre.cn. You need a private room, a computer that meets ETS requirements, and a stable internet connection.
