How to register
- 1
Create an account at mba.com, the only official registration channel.
- 2
Pick your delivery: a Pearson VUE test center, or the online exam at home.
- 3
Choose a date and seat. Appointments open up to about 6 months ahead, and popular test-center seats in India fill around application deadlines.
- 4
Pay the fee (US$275 test center, US$300 online in the US and India) and keep the confirmation email.
- 5
Finish any account changes at least 72 hours before the appointment; rescheduling and cancelling close 24 hours before it.
When you can take it
The GMAT runs year-round. Test-center availability depends on the seat inventory at each venue, and online appointments run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in many regions, with the exception of mainland China, where the online exam is not offered. You can book up to about six months in advance, which is the practical horizon for tying a test date to an application round: work backward from your earliest school deadline, leave room for one retake, and book the seat before you finalize the study plan.
Retake rules
You can sit the GMAT up to five times in any rolling 12-month period, counting test-center and online attempts together, with at least 16 days between attempts. There is no lifetime limit. A perfect 805 locks you out for five years, and a missed appointment forfeits the full fee and imposes a 24-hour wait before rebooking. Appointments you cancel in advance do not count toward the five, and neither do no-shows.
ID requirements
| Situation | What GMAC requires |
|---|---|
| Testing in India (citizens) | An international passport, for both test-center and online appointments. Aadhaar cards have not been accepted since the policy update of June 11, 2025. |
| Testing outside your country of citizenship | A passport, always. |
| Ages 13 to 17 | Test-center appointments only, with written parental or guardian consent. |
| Ages 18 and over | Standard government ID rules apply. |
Rescheduling and cancelling
Changes stay open until 24 hours before the appointment. The cost depends on how far ahead you act: rescheduling a test-center seat costs US$55 more than 60 days out, US$110 at 15 to 60 days, and US$165 at 14 days or fewer, and online reschedules run about 10 percent more. Cancelling returns US$110, US$80 or US$55 on the same windows. Inside the EU there is also a 14-day cooling-off period: a full refund if you cancel within 14 days of registering. Phone rescheduling (US$10 service fee) works for test-center seats only.
Online or test center?
Same questions, same scoring, same weight with schools. Choose the test center if you want the official environment and erasable noteboards; choose online if travel is the problem, and rehearse with a small whiteboard at home first, because the physical one is capped at 12 by 20 inches.
Registration questions
How far in advance can I schedule the GMAT?
Appointments are typically available up to six months ahead. Online appointments run around the clock in most regions, so short-notice slots are easier to find there than at a test center.
How many times can I take the GMAT in a year?
Five times in any rolling 12-month period, test-center and online attempts combined, with at least 16 days between attempts and no lifetime limit.
What ID do I need for the GMAT in India?
A valid international passport, for both test-center and online appointments. Aadhaar cards have not been accepted since June 11, 2025.
Can I reschedule by phone?
Yes, for test-center appointments, with a US$10 service fee. Online appointments are rescheduled through your mba.com account only.
What happens if I miss my appointment?
You forfeit the full fee, wait 24 hours before rebooking, and pay the full fee again for the new appointment. A missed appointment does not count toward the five-attempt annual limit.
