Stanford GSB MBA Essays: 2026-27 Prompts and Word Limits

The Stanford GSB MBA essay prompts, word limits, optional short answer question, and Additional Information rules, quoted from the school.

Essay Overview

Stanford GSB asks for two personal essays: up to 650 words for "What matters most to you, and why?" and up to 350 words for "Why Stanford for you?". Applicants to both the MBA and MSx programs write a third essay. The prompts below are quoted from the Stanford GSB Essays page as published on October 15, 2026, during the 2026-27 application cycle.

Essay Prompts

  1. What matters most to you, and why? (up to 650 words) "For this essay, we would like you to reflect deeply and write from the heart. Once you’ve identified what matters most to you, help us understand why. You might consider, for example, what makes this so important to you? What people, insights, or experiences have shaped your perspectives?"
  2. Why Stanford for you? (up to 350 words) "Describe your aspirations and how your Stanford GSB experience will help you realize them. If you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, use this essay to address your interest in both programs."
  3. How will you enhance the MSx community? (joint MBA and MSx applicants only) "For this essay, describe how you plan to support and enhance the experience of your classmates and the learning community at Stanford GSB."

Optional Short Answer Question

Up to three examples, each up to 1,200 characters (about 200 words). The question: "We believe that leadership comes through in different shapes and forms and look for examples of when you have taken initiative, persisted through challenges, engaged others in your efforts, or supported those around you. Think about a time in the last five years when you’ve created a significant impact, whether in professional, extracurricular, civic, or academic settings. What was the situation, what did you do, and what was the impact?"

Rules Stated by Stanford

  • Having another person or tool write your essays violates the application terms and may result in denial or revocation of admission.
  • Feedback from others on a completed application is allowed; coaching that makes any part of the application no longer exclusively yours is not.
  • The Additional Information section is for facts not captured elsewhere, such as extenuating circumstances, research experience, why a current supervisor is not a recommender, or founders’ plans for their company. It should not be used as an additional essay.
